If the number of indexed web pages of your website exceeds the actual one, this can be a result of duplicate content. In some cases, search engines consider duplicate content as cheating and manipulation. Web masters have to inspect the presence of any duplicate content on their websites and blogs. It is recommended to carefully syndicate the content to other websites, use 301-redirect where it is needed and disallow such article`s indexation in the robots.txt file.

If the amount of indexed web-pages is smaller than the actual one, the website receives fewer visitors by low-frequency and mid-frequency inquiries. External backlinks to the pages that are absent in a search engine`s index, as well as the creation of sitemaps, will help to increase count of indexed pages. But not only duplicate content can be an issue of poor indexing.

Website indexing problems can be solved by finding at least one of the following issues:

Robots.txt file disallows page or folder by mistake. For any reason, you may have disallowed a folder or section of the website during development or testing, and forgot to remove that restrictions in your robots.txt file. This is probably the easiest issue to check and fix.

URLs contain excluded parameters (Google issue). As in the robots.txt file, you can tell Google to ignore some parameters if those parameters contain duplicate content. Some indexing problems may be caused by asking Google to exclude a parameters you actually wanted to be included. Check your Google webmaster tools account under site configuration, settings, Parameter Handling.

Duplicate content. Many websites contain duplicate content. In some cases, this is inevitable and not a problem. The key to control duplicate content issues is to tell search engine which page of them you want to be read, and how to get there. Use your robots.txt file and parameter handling to tell search engine which pages to ignore, and make sure spiders can get into the web-page you want them to index. Not all pages with content problems are duplicate. Sometimes the content is even inadequate for ranking.
The best way to present content is to tell the visitor and the search engine what that page is about. If there`s no text on the page, or text is very little, the search engines doesn`t know how to rank that page. Having a page title and a description META tags isn`t enough. The content on the page has to support the keywords in your titles and descriptions or you might as well not even have them. Make at least one or tho paragraph of text content for such pages to describe page content.

Not enough inbound backlinks to get deep into the site. Backlinks are the bread and butter of search engine rankings. If your website don`t have a healthy number of backlinks coming into your site, there`s not enough "link juice" to trickle down into some deep pages. Ideally, you`ve build a good number of quality links into interior pages of the website to help push that juice deep into it. Remember, the larger the site, the more quality backlinks you need to get high search engine rankings. Consider your pages to be like a kitchen colander, the more holes it has (outbound links) the faster the juice drains out off website.

No links to that page on an indexed pages. Having either a good internal contextual link or navigational link to those deep pages is key to getting the search engine spiders to it. Believe it or not, sometimes links gong to deep website pages are images or buttons. In many cases those are not being followed by search engine spiders. This sounds like a simple thing to check, depending on the number of un-indexed URLs.

Non-indexing Navigation. Every flash navigation don`t provide indexable links to interior pages. You can solve this issue by building contextual links to your internal pages, but it is better to provide duplicating indexable navigation through all website.

Fixing such indexing issues is definitely worth the time you invest into it. It also takes a lot of approaches. Start with the easy steps, and progress to hard ones to complete and make your website well indexing.
